Chromebook Only Pilot

Mills will pilot a school-issued, Chromebook-only learning environment starting April 2026 and continuing through the end of the school year.

Purpose of the pilot:

  • Grounded in equity: when students bring a variety of personal laptops and devices, they often have access to different software, extensions, and outside resources that are not universally available to all students, which can inadvertently create inequities in the classroom for access and opportunity.

  • Student safety: Personal devices put pressure on the Wi-Fi network and are not monitored by our BARK alert system. BARK is an alert system that notifies us of potential safety concerns and issues affecting student well-being.

  • Instructional Integrity and Responsible AI Use: Some teachers use the Lockdown Browser and monitoring software (Hapara) during instructional time to ensure academic integrity and support responsible digital citizenship, which are only functional on school-issued Chromebooks.

  • Full Access to Canvas: certain Canvas features function only on school-issued devices

  • Reduce instructional distractions: i.e.: texting, chatting, and social media on personal devices

Exemptions/Waivers

  • We understand that certain clubs and groups may make a request to use personal devices after instructional hours (i.e., Robotics meetings after school; musical production)

  • The principal will review and decide on all waiver requests.
