Greetings Vikings!
I am fortunate to be your assistant principal. I am grateful to be chosen and selected to be one of your leaders at Mills. My career in education began in Napa Unified School District. While at NVUSD, I taught multiple classes and was also a case manager for students with IEPs. During this time, I was asked to be a leader of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). PBIS opened the door for me to learn about restorative justice and teaching students how to resolve conflicts and repair harm so it does not happen again.
I enjoy bike riding, concerts, listening to audio books and podcasts, BBQing, and kayaking. My family and I have lived in Martinez for the last six years. I love going to Oakland to try different restaurants and hang out with friends who live there.
My educational philosophy centers around establishing a classroom environment and community which is fair, safe, and enjoyable for students. It is essential to have expectations and norms which lay the foundation for the learning environment.
In the coming weeks and months, I will continue to take the time to meet with students, parents, and staff members to better understand the needs and aspirations of the Mills community. Please feel free to reach out to me by email, or stop by my office if you would like to share your thoughts and ideas.
I am genuinely looking to the journey ahead, and I am confident that "together we can do great things" (Mother Teresa). Thank you for your warm welcome, and I look forward to a productive and inspiring school year.
Warm regards,
Deyango Harris
