Accessibility Statement

San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) is committed to providing access to all individuals seeking information on our website, including persons with disabilities.

What is Web accessibility and why is it important?

When not coded properly, websites can be difficult or impossible to access by people that rely on assistive technologies to navigate the digital world. Websites must be designed, developed and maintained in a manner that accommodates users with diverse abilities – in a manner that focuses on user-first, universal design principles.

In the same sense that a building must provide certain physical accommodations - ramps, rails, wide doorways, elevators - websites should provide accommodations in the digital space.

What we are doing:

In July 2024, SMUHSD implemented the new District and school websites with the intention of providing the following accessibility features:

  • A clean and crisp design

  • Consistent navigation structure

  • Minimal use of frames and image maps

  • Alt attributes on non-decorative images for screen readers and text browsers

  • Linear, logical web page content that works well with screen readers and other assistive computer technology

  • Logical tab order through links, form controls, and objects

  • Font and background color contrast for visitors with low vision and users of monitors and Internet devices with black and white screens

  • Navigation bars for access to the navigation mechanism

  • Identifying English as the natural language of the public portal to improve accessibility for assistive technologies, search engines and foreign language translation software
